This program of eight course modules on reading was developed by the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas, a leading research and development organization dedicated to helping teachers assist individuals with special needs. Content is designed to provide teachers with information to help them retain their certification and meet on-going continuing education requirements.
The Individual Learning Content modules focused on reading cover the background and preparation essential to becoming a skilled reading teacher.
Module 1: Overview of Learning Disabilities and Reading Disabilities
This module teaches some of the important concepts related to practices for teaching reading to those with learning disabilities. The lessons introduce you to ways reading disabilities can affect the development of literacy skills in classrooms.
Module 2: Beginning Word Reading
This module provides several research-based interventions to develop phonological awareness, beginning word recognition, and beginning spelling. Using these interventions has been shown to reduce the number of students with reading disabilities.
Module 3: Advanced Word Reading and Developing Reading Fluency
This module continues to address the instructional methods that have been shown to improve the word recognition and fluency skills of individuals with learning disabilities.
Module 4: Basic Principles in Reading Comprehension
This module focuses on different aspects of reading comprehension that must be understood to work effectively with reading disabled students. It offers critical ideas upon which to build instruction for struggling readers and sets the stage for other modules that will present detailed information on specific aspects of reading comprehension.
Module 5: Building Background Knowledge for Reading Comprehension
This module addresses the important area of helping students develop the knowledge base they need to be successful readers. It will explain the importance of background knowledge, its effects on reading comprehension, and ways to facilitate its development for students with reading disabilities.
Module 6: Analyzing Text to Enable Comprehension
This module focuses on improvement in reading comprehension that can result from students having sufficient awareness of the way written materials are organized and knowing the cues to look for to figure out patterns in text.
Module 7: Goal Specific Comprehension Strategies
This module teaches particular strategies readers can use to enhance their processing of a variety of materials at different points in the reading process. Five types of strategies are covered: preview, self-questioning, visual imagery, paraphrasing, and summarization. Because this module deals with strategies, an important thread relates to the kind of instruction teachers must do to teach students how to independently use these techniques.
Module 8: Putting It All Together
This module teaches how readers need to package strategic reading and how teachers need to package strategic teaching of reading. It provides guidance in making decisions about selecting and using programs in the classroom and the school.
The cost of each module is $100. You may also purchase the entire library of eight modules for $700.
The cost for Learning Disabilities Worldwide (LDW) members is $62 per module, or $470 for the entire library. LDW members must complete the verification form to receive the discount.
